'Game of Shrooms' grew from Richmond experiment to a worldwide art scavenger hunt

Back in 2016, Richmond artist Daniel "Attaboy" Seifert began hiding tiny mushroom-themed art pieces in public spaces. The phenomenon has grown to a global fungi public art scavenger hunt that has come to be known as "Game of Shrooms." "I started it myself just planting mushrooms. I was in a depression and I was trying to regain control of my inner mental narrative," says Seifert.

"Grow in the Dark" is a series by Daniel "Attaboy" Seifert that is a result of the 2016 presidential election. Attaboy explains that mushrooms grow "on the decay of dead matter," conveying the idea that one can grow from what seems to be destruction.

Daniel "Attaboy" Seifert found himself painting mushrooms this past year, but surprisingly, his inspiration was not psychedelics. The artist, author and co-founder of Hi-Fructose magazine started shrooming-in the artistic sense that is-after the 2016 election. Attaboy is an internationally shown artist, creator and toy designer whose work is seen in galleries, museums, toy boutiques, magazines (Newsweek, Wired, Juxtapoz, Clutter, Playtimes, etc.), calendars, and art books. After years of creating, recreating, and inventing award-winning and best selling toys for Hasbro and Milton Bradley, he went AWOL to create his own art and licensing studio.
